Sontak pertemuan tersebut menuai kontroversi, mengingat hal ini bertentangan dengan sikap Indonesia yang mengecam keras agresi Israel di Gaza.
Tindakan dari lima warga Nahdliyin ini pun turut dikecam oleh Pengurus Besar Nahdlatul Ulama (PBNU).
Ketua PBNU Savic Ali dalam keterangan pada Minggu (14/7/2024) menyatakan, pihaknya tak mengetahui tujuan pertemuan lima warga Nahdliyin itu dengan Herzog.
Savic juga mempertanyakan pihak yang menjadi sponsor pertemuan tersebut.
Menurut Savic, pertemuan mereka dengan Herzog melukai perasaan seluruh warga NU dan juga memperburuk citra.
Pasalnya, kelimanya dinilai tak memahami geopolitik dan tak mengerti kebijakan NU secara organisasi.
Savic menegaskan, hingga saat ini sikap PBNU dan Nahdliyin cukup jelas, yakni berdiri di sisi Palestina dan mengecam agresi militer Israel.
Terlebih Israel terus menerus melancarkan serangannya ke Gaza dan menewaskan banyak korban jiwa dari kalangan sipil termasuk anak-anak.
Dikatakan oleh Savic bahwa PBNU sedang berkomunikasi intensif dengan Palestina untuk membahas situasi terkini.
Savic lantas menyinggung pertemuan Ketua Umum PBNU Yahya Cholil Staquf dengan Dubes Palestina untuk membicarakan perkembangan di Palestina.
Selain itu juga untuk mendiskusikan hal yang bisa dilakukan NU dalam mendukung kemerdekaan Palestina dan menghentikan kekerasan.
