Kejadian nahas tersebut terjadi pada Rabu (16/7) dan telah menewaskan 61 orang.
Kebakaran dilaporkan bermula dari lantai satu hyper mall.
Hingga dengan cepat menjalar ke seluruh bangunan berlantai lima yang juga terdapat restoran.
Banyak korban tewas lantaran terjebak di dalam kamar mandi.
Pihak berwenang melaporkan bahwa jumlah korban tewas akibat kebakaran mencapai 50 orang.
Petugas pemadam kebakaran bekerja sejak malam hingga pukul 04.00 pagi waktu setempat, berjuang menyelamatkan korban dan memadamkan api.
Beberapa korban masih belum ditemukan, tertimbun di bawah reruntuhan.
Gubernur Provinsi Wasit, Mohammed al-Mayahi, mengumumkan masa berkabung nasional selama tiga hari.
Ia pun juga memastikan penyelidikan telah dilakukan, dan diharapkan hasil akan diumumkan dalam 48 jam ke depan.
Tragedi ini mengingatkan publik akan insiden mematikan lainnya yang terjadi di Irak.
